In 2027 summer time (ora legale) starts on Sunday 28 March: at 2:00 the clocks go forward to 3:00 and you sleep an hour less. It ends on Sunday 31 October, when 3:00 goes back to 2:00. The dates follow European Directive 2000/84/EC: summer time starts on the last Sunday in March and ends on the last Sunday in October, at the same moment across the Union. In 2027 it lasts 217 days. The March change falls on Easter night itself, 28 March: it will happen again in 2032. Phones and computers update themselves; analogue clocks, ovens and cars need changing by hand. In Italy the reference for the exact time is INRiM, the national metrology institute in Turin. The European proposal to scrap clock changes, voted by the European Parliament in 2019, was never approved by the Council: for now the change stays.

The European rule

The government no longer sets the dates year by year: Directive 2000/84/EC fixes, for every EU country, the start of summer time at 1:00 universal time on the last Sunday in March and its end at 1:00 on the last Sunday in October. In Italy, on Central European Time, 1:00 universal time is 2:00 in winter and 3:00 in summer. The reference time signal is broadcast by INRiM.

With summer time the sun sets an hour later: at the end of June in Rome sunset is after 20:45. In exchange, in the first weeks after the March change, mornings stay dark for longer. The effect on sleep lasts a few days.

Common questions

When do the clocks change in Italy in 2027?

Twice. Summer time starts on Sunday 28 March at 2:00, when clocks go forward one hour, and ends on Sunday 31 October at 3:00, when they go back. In 2028 the dates are 26 March and 29 October. The dates follow EU Directive 2000/84/EC.

Do you lose or gain an hour of sleep in March?

You lose one. In March the clocks go forward from 2:00 to 3:00 and that night lasts 23 hours. In October, back on standard time, the clocks go back and you sleep an hour more. An easy way to remember: spring forward, fall back.

Will summer time be abolished in Europe?

Not for now. In 2018 the European Commission proposed ending seasonal clock changes and in 2019 the European Parliament voted in favour, but the Council, which brings together national governments, never reached agreement. As long as Directive 2000/84/EC stays in force, clocks change twice a year.
