The patron saint's day in Firenze

In Florence 24 June is the most heartfelt feast of the year: the Baptistery is dedicated to the saint, and in the evening the final of the calcio storico is traditionally played in Piazza Santa Croce, followed by fireworks. As in Turin, the date falls three weeks after 2 June, and the two days together make June a short month for people working in the city. St John is also the patron saint of Busto Arsizio, Cesena, Genova, Monza and Torino.

Calcio storico, fireworks and the Baptistery

The calcio storico tournament is played in Piazza Santa Croce between the four historic quarters, Santa Croce, Santo Spirito, Santa Maria Novella and San Giovanni, and the final is traditionally on 24 June. In the evening the San Giovanni fireworks can be seen from the river embankments and Piazzale Michelangelo. The Baptistery, in front of the cathedral, is dedicated to the patron saint. People working outside the municipality, in Sesto Fiorentino, Scandicci or Bagno a Ripoli, do not get 24 June off unless their own patron saint falls on the same day. In 2028 24 June falls on a Saturday and in 2029 on a Sunday: two years with no extra day.
