The patron saint of Roma is Santi Pietro e Paolo, celebrated on 29 June: the municipality states it on its own website, which we read on 28 October 2026. Rome is the only regional capital where the patron saint’s day is a holiday by law, not just by collective agreement. In 2027 29 June falls on a Tuesday, and Monday 28 is the leave day that joins the weekend to the feast. With the patron saint, someone working in Roma Monday to Friday has 253 working days in 2027, against 254 without. 29 June is the feast of Saints Peter and Paul in the calendar of the whole Church, but only in the municipality of Rome is it a civil day of rest. Until 1977 it was a holiday across Italy; today it is one, by law, only in the capital.

The patron saint's day in Roma

29 June has a different history from other patron saints. Until 1977 it was a holiday across Italy; Law 54 took it off the national list. In 1985 Presidential Decree 792 recognised it again as a holiday, but only in the municipality of Rome, as the feast of the city's patron saints. That is why in Rome 29 June is a holiday by law, not just by custom or collective agreement, as with other towns' patron saints.

29 June in Rome, between the Vatican and public offices

On 29 June St Peter’s Basilica celebrates the two apostles with a papal mass, during which the metropolitan archbishops appointed that year receive the pallium. For workers one fact matters most: since it is a holiday by law in the municipality, 29 June applies to everyone working in the city, public employees included, with no need for a clause in a collective agreement. People working in another town of the metropolitan area, such as Fiumicino, follow that town’s patron saint instead. For long weekends, 29 June pays off most in years when it falls on a Monday or a Friday, as in 2026 and 2029, giving a long weekend with no leave; it takes one leave day when it falls on a Tuesday or Thursday, as in 2027 and 2028.

Common questions

Who is the patron saint of Roma?

Santi Pietro e Paolo, celebrated every year on 29 June. The information comes from the official website of the Comune di Roma, read on 28 October 2026. In 2027 it falls on a Tuesday, in 2028 on a Thursday. It applies to people working in the town, even if they live elsewhere.

Is 29 June a holiday only in Rome?

As a civil holiday, yes. Law 54 of 1977 abolished 29 June nationally and Presidential Decree 792 of 1985 restored it for the municipality of Rome alone. Elsewhere Saints Peter and Paul are a religious feast with no day off, except in towns that have them as patron saints.

Do shops and offices close in Rome on 29 June?

Municipal and public offices do, because 29 June is a statutory holiday in Rome. Shops are up to the owner, and many in the centre stay open. For employees the day counts as a public holiday: anyone working on 29 June is entitled to the premium set by their contract.
