Two bridges remain in 2026, and they are among the best of the year. The Immaculate Conception falls on a Tuesday: a single leave day on 7 December gives 4 days off, from 5 December to 8 December. Then Christmas, on a Friday, with St Stephen's Day on Saturday and New Year's Day 2027 on a Friday again: 4 leave days, Mon 28 December – Thu 31 December, give 10 days off in a row up to 3 January 2027. If your contract gives you 24 and 31 December off, 3 leave days buy 11 days off. Over the whole year, ten leave days spread at best were worth 28 days off; for the months already gone the tool still shows the result, handy for comparing 2026 with 2027 and 2028.

The bridges at the end of 2026, day by day

The table sorts every bridge of 2026 from the best value down. The first ones, costing a single leave day, are nearly all behind us: 2 January, 5 January before Epiphany and 1 June before Republic Day. The one on 7 December remains. Among the longer ones, Christmas week remains, the best of the year because it joins three holidays.

2026 was the first year with 4 October as a holiday, but St Francis fell on a Sunday and brought nothing; All Saints' Day was a Sunday too. The first 4 October that makes a bridge is in 2027, on a Monday: see St Francis, 4 October.

Christmas 2026 with and without Christmas Eve off

Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve are not public holidays. If your contract or employer gives them off, choose "Days off" in the tool's extra options: the year-end block then starts on 24 December and 3 leave days stretch it to 11 days. Without them you need 4 days for 10.

If you still have 2026 leave and are unsure whether to use it now, remember the rule in article 10 of Legislative Decree 66 of 2003: two weeks within the year, the rest within eighteen months. Your minimum leave is worked out on the annual leave page; next year's bridges are on the long weekends 2027 page.

2026 compared

What the same number of leave days buys changes a lot from year to year, because it depends on how many holidays fall on a weekday. In 2026 there were 7, in 2027 there will be 7, in 2028 11.

Common questions

Is 7 December 2026 a bridge day in Italy?

Yes. The Immaculate Conception, 8 December, is a Tuesday in 2026. Take Monday 7 December off and you get four days, Saturday 5 to Tuesday 8. In Milan 7 December is also Sant'Ambrogio, the city's patron saint, so the bridge comes without using leave.

How much leave do I need over Christmas 2026?

Christmas Day is a Friday, St Stephen's Day a Saturday and New Year's Day 2027 a Friday again. 4 leave days, 28 to 31 December, give 10 days off in a row, up to Sunday 3 January. If 31 December is off under your contract, 3 are enough.

Do I lose my unused 2026 leave?

Not straight away. Of the four minimum weeks, at least two must be taken in the year they accrue; the other two within the following eighteen months, so by 30 June 2028 for 2026 leave. Your collective agreement can set different rules for days above the legal minimum.
