The patron saint of Milano is Sant'Ambrogio, celebrated on 7 December: the municipality states it on its own website, which we read on 28 October 2026. In Milan the patron saint falls the day before the Immaculate Conception, and the two feasts go together: in 2027 they are Tuesday 7 and Wednesday 8 December, and taking Monday 6 off gives five free days in a row. With the patron saint, someone working in Milano Monday to Friday has 253 working days in 2027, against 254 without. St Ambrose was bishop of Milan in the 4th century and gives his name to the Ambrosian rite followed by the diocese. On 7 December the city slows down: schools and council offices close, while many shops in the centre stay open for Christmas shopping.

The patron saint's day in Milano

St Ambrose always falls the day before the Immaculate Conception, which is why Milan's December bridge is the most sought-after of the year: together the two feasts make two consecutive rest days whenever neither falls on a weekend. 7 December is also the traditional opening night of La Scala and the date of the Oh bej! Oh bej! market around Castello Sforzesco. The diocese follows the Ambrosian rite, which also explains its longer Carnival.

The Ambrogino d’oro and the city on 7 December

On 7 December the City of Milan presents its civic awards, the Ambrogino d’oro, to people and associations who have brought credit to the city. In the evening La Scala opens its season, and the Oh bej! Oh bej! fair takes place around Castello Sforzesco. For workers the rule is the same as for every patron saint: the workplace counts, so someone living in Monza and working in Milan has 7 December off, not 24 June. The easiest bridge comes in years when St Ambrose falls on a Monday, as in 2026, when Saturday 5 to the Immaculate Conception on Tuesday gives four days with no leave, or on a Thursday, as in 2028, when the Immaculate Conception is a Friday and the weekend follows straight on.
