Italy still has 13 national holidays in 2028, but the calendar spreads them much more kindly: 11 fall between Monday and Friday and only 1, New Year's Day, lands on a Saturday. 25 April and Ferragosto are on a Tuesday, Epiphany on a Thursday, 2 June and the Immaculate Conception on a Friday, 1 May and Christmas Day on a Monday, St Francis and All Saints' Day on a Wednesday. Easter falls on 16 April 2028, so Easter Monday and 25 April are eight days apart. 2028 is a leap year with 29 February, yet working days from Monday to Friday drop to 249, five fewer than in 2027, precisely because more holidays take a working day away. For businesses that means a few production days less; for anyone planning leave, the best year of the decade.

2028 compared with the neighbouring years

The table lines up the holidays from 2026 to 2028. It shows clearly how the same date changes weekday: 25 April moves from Saturday to Sunday to Tuesday, Christmas Day from Friday to Saturday to Monday.

What it means for workers

Eleven weekday holidays mean eleven paid rest days for anyone working Monday to Friday, against seven in 2027. For those who work on a holiday, the premium is set by the collective agreement. For hourly-paid workers, article 5 of Law 260 of 1949 grants normal daily pay on the civil holidays, 25 April, 1 May and 2 June, even when they do not work: in 2028 all three fall on a weekday.

The feasts abolished by Law 54 of 1977 do not come back: Ascension and Corpus Christi, which would fall on a Thursday in 2028, remain working days. 4 October, on the other hand, is a holiday under Law 151 of 2025 and falls on a Wednesday.

Common questions

How many Italian holidays fall on a weekday in 2028?

11 of 13, counting Easter among the 13. Only New Year's Day, Saturday 1 January 2028, falls on a weekend, besides Easter, which is always a Sunday. That is about as good as the Italian calendar gets. Easter Monday, 17 April, falls on a Monday by definition.

When is Easter 2028?

Easter Sunday 2028 is 16 April 2028, Easter Monday the day after. It is a late Easter: 25 April, a Tuesday, comes eight days after Easter Monday. Taking leave from Tuesday 18 to Friday 21 April and on Monday 24 joins Easter and Liberation Day.

How many working days are there in Italy in 2028?

249 from Monday to Friday, not counting the patron saint. December and April are the shortest months with 18 and 18 days, March the longest with 23. On a six-day week, Monday to Saturday, there are more; the working-days tool on this site counts them for any town.
