Prepared by Radif Partners · Method · Law 260/1949 and amendments checked on 28 October 2026
2026 is the first year with 13 national holidays: Law 151 of 2025, published in the Official Gazette on 10 October 2025, made 4 October a holiday from 1 January 2026. The debut was unlucky: St Francis fell on a Sunday, as did All Saints' Day, and with 25 April, Ferragosto and St Stephen's Day on a Saturday that makes 5 holidays lost to the weekend. The 7 on a weekday were New Year's Day (1 January, Thursday), Epiphany (6 January, Tuesday), Easter Monday (Pasquetta) (6 April, Monday), Labour Day (1 May, Friday), Republic Day (2 June, Tuesday), Immaculate Conception (8 December, Tuesday), Christmas Day (25 December, Friday). At the end of October two holidays remain: the Immaculate Conception on a Tuesday, with the bridge on Monday 7 December, and Christmas Day on a Friday. Working days from Monday to Friday number 254, the same as in 2027 but spread differently.
The 2026 holidays, one by one
The tool above shows the list with dates. 2026 started well, with New Year's Day on a Thursday and Epiphany on a Tuesday: two one-day bridges in the same week. Easter fell on 5 April 2026 and Easter Monday the day after. 1 May on a Friday gave a long weekend without leave; 2 June on a Tuesday made 1 June a bridge.
The second half of the year was meaner: Ferragosto on a Saturday, St Francis and All Saints' Day on a Sunday. The Immaculate Conception and Christmas remain, closing the year with the two best bridges of the autumn.
4 October: how it became a holiday
Until 2025, 4 October was a civil commemoration for Italy's patron saints, with ceremonies but no day off. Law 151 of 2025 added it to the public holidays as the national feast of St Francis, with the stated aim of celebrating the values of peace, brotherhood and care for the environment linked to St Francis. The text is in Official Gazette no. 236 of 2025. For workers it counts like the other holidays: those who work that day get the premium set by their contract, those who do not are paid as normal.

2026 compared with 2027
With 7 holidays on a weekday, 2026 and 2027 look alike on paper, but 2026 had four bridges costing one leave day and 2027 has none. The position in the week makes the difference: a Tuesday or Thursday holiday creates a bridge, a Wednesday one does not. The 2027 dates are on public holidays 2027, the bridges left in 2026 on long weekends 2026.
