When a holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, Italy does not move it to another day: no law provides a substitute day, unlike the United Kingdom or Spain. In 2027 that happens to 5 holidays: Liberation Day, Assumption Day (Ferragosto), St Stephen's Day on a Sunday, Labour Day and Christmas Day on a Saturday. For the civil holidays, however, article 5 of Law 260 of 1949 provides compensation: if 25 April, 1 May or 2 June falls on a Sunday, workers are owed an extra day's pay. In 2027 that concerns Liberation Day. For the other holidays on a Sunday the collective agreement decides, and it often grants the same: check your April payslip. Holidays on a Saturday give nothing extra by law, unless your contract says otherwise.

Holidays on the weekend, year by year

How many holidays land on a weekend depends on the calendar alone. In 2026 there were 5, in 2027 there are 5, and in 2028 just one, New Year's Day on a Saturday. Civil holidays on a Sunday number 0 in 2026, 1 in 2027 and 0 in 2028.

What the law says

Article 5 of Law 260 of 1949 covers the civil holidays: 2 June, 25 April, 1 May and, in the text, 4 November too, which has not been a holiday since 1977. For these days the State, public bodies and private employers must pay normal daily wages to workers paid by the hour; those who work on those days also get the hours worked with the holiday premium; and when the holiday falls on a Sunday a further day's pay is due.

Religious holidays, from New Year's Day to St Stephen's Day, are not named in that article: how those falling on a Sunday are treated is set by the collective agreement. Law 151 of 2025, which made 4 October a holiday, amended article 2 but not article 5: the new holiday is not on the list of civil holidays.

Common questions

Does Italy give a substitute day when a holiday falls on a Sunday?

No. In Italy a holiday falling on a Sunday or Saturday is not moved to the Monday and gives no extra rest day. For the civil holidays, such as 25 April, the law grants extra pay instead; for the others it depends on the collective agreement.

What does article 5 of Law 260 of 1949 say?

For the civil holidays, 25 April, 1 May and 2 June, article 5 sets workers' pay: hourly-paid staff still get their daily pay, those who work on those days get the holiday premium, and if the holiday falls on a Sunday an extra day's pay is due.

Is 25 April 2027 paid extra, as it is a Sunday?

25 April 2027 falls on a Sunday. As a civil holiday it comes under article 5 of Law 260 of 1949: on top of normal pay, an extra daily amount is due, which usually appears on that month's payslip. The collective agreement specifies how it is calculated.
