The patron saint of Napoli is San Gennaro, celebrated on 19 September: the municipality states it on its own website, which we read on 28 October 2026. 19 September is the only holiday in September for people working in Naples. In 2027 it falls on a Sunday and changes nothing; in 2028 it will be a Tuesday, and taking Monday 18 off gives four days in a row. With the patron saint, someone working in Napoli Monday to Friday has 254 working days in 2027, against 254 without. San Gennaro was bishop of Benevento and was martyred at Pozzuoli in the early 4th century; his relics are kept in Naples Cathedral. It is the city’s most heartfelt feast, and the day off applies to anyone working in the municipality.

The patron saint's day in Napoli
19 September is the day the cathedral awaits the liquefaction of San Gennaro's blood, one of three such occasions a year along with the Saturday before the first Sunday in May and 16 December. For the working calendar only 19 September counts, the patron saint's day recognised by the municipality. September has no other national holiday, so when the 19th falls on a weekday it is the only possible bridge of the month.
San Gennaro and the working calendar in Naples
The 19 September feast centres on the cathedral, where the phial with the saint’s blood is displayed; the Treasure of San Gennaro Museum, next to the cathedral, keeps the gifts received over the centuries. For work the practical point is different: the patron saint’s day applies in the municipality of Naples, not across the whole metropolitan area. Pozzuoli or Casoria have their own patron saints, and people working there follow those. In years when 19 September falls on a Friday or a Monday, as in 2031 and 2033, the long weekend comes with no leave; on a Saturday or Sunday, as in 2026 and 2027, the day is off anyway but adds nothing to your rest days.
