In Italy Mother's Day (festa della mamma) is celebrated on the second Sunday in May: in 2027 that is Sunday 9 May. In 2026 it was on 10 May, in 2028 it will be on 14 May. The date therefore always falls between 8 and 14 May, the same as in many other countries from the United States to Germany, while the United Kingdom celebrates during Lent and France usually at the end of May. It is not a civil holiday and is not on the list in Law 260 of 1949, but as it falls on a Sunday it is a rest day for most people anyway. Father's Day is on 19 March, St Joseph's Day, which was also a public holiday until 1977, when Law 54 took it off the list. In 2027 19 March falls on a Friday and is a working day. In schools the days before are often a time for crafts and poems.

A celebration with no day off

Mother's Day is an observance, not a holiday: it is not on the list of holidays in Law 260 of 1949. It falls on a Sunday anyway, so nothing changes for anyone working Monday to Friday; for those working Sundays, the rules for Sunday work apply, not those for holidays.

Father's Day has a different history. St Joseph's Day, 19 March, was a holiday until Law 54 of 1977 removed the civil status of five religious feasts to increase working days. Many collective agreements still make up for those abolished holidays with paid hours off: if you have some, 19 March may be the right day to use them.
